What is the best month to visit Seward, Alaska? ›

Best Time to Visit Seward

If you're coming to Seward for the first time, it's best to plan your trip for the summer months (May to August) when the temperatures peak in the mid-60s and sunlight can last for 19 hours per day.

We always recommend two nights in Seward, especially if you're driving. Two nights allows you to settle in, not feel rushed, and gives you time to see the best of what Seward has to offer -- both on the water and on land. If you decide to ride The Alaska Railroad, don't worry about needing a car.

Mountains, ocean, glaciers, and fishing – Seward is packed with incredible nature and an authentic Alaska feel. What's more, it's the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park – one of the most striking national parks in the US.

Alaska basks in gorgeous 24-hour daylight during two months of the year surrounding the summer solstice. This is when Alaska residents get their outdoor activities in, including 2:00 am hikes, dog walks, and beach volleyball. Mid-May through mid-July are the best months to cruise to Alaska to soak in the midnight sun.

EPA approved bear pepper sprays are recommended. Bear pepper spray is available for rental and purchase in Seward.

Located on Resurrection Bay, a fjord of the Gulf of Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula, Seward is situated on Alaska's southern coast, approximately 120 miles (190 km) by road from Alaska's largest city, Anchorage.

You can expect your visit to have a combination of sunny and rainy days. In our experience late May into early July tend to be the driest with an increase in rain beginning in mid-July. August is a bit rainier and September usually marks the beginning of fall in Seward.

Seward sits on the edge of Resurrection Bay, a deep fjord carved out by a glacier thousands of years ago. High above the town, almost 40 glaciers flow down from the Harding Icefield in the Kenai Mountains. A stop in Seward can combine road-accessible glacier views with day cruises, glacial kayaking, or trekking.

Are Northern Lights visible in Seward? ›

Your ability to see the aurora depends on good solar flare activity and clear skies. We do get some spectacular Northern Lights, but due to our coastal location and frequent clouds, our displays are not as reliable as what you might find further north.

A sigh of relief in Seward as water is once again safe for drinking. Some good news for Seward residents – you can now drink the city's water again.

Later in the year, the best place for a glimpse of a Black Bear is near the town of Hope. The combination of dark forest with large berry patches and a nearby Resurrection Creek with salmon makes this area probably the highest density of Black Bears on the Seward Ranger District.

Beginning in July and stretching through to the end of August the summer is the nicest time of year to travel. July is the best month to visit, although it is also the busiest. Warm days and short nights make this a really nice time of year to visit and much of the state's iconic wildlife is very active.

Most glacier excursions are best done in the summer and early fall months, typically May through September, but some glaciers offer year-round recreation opportunities.

April, May, and June usually have a few sunny periods lasting several days. But, these multiday sunny periods can occur into September. Cloudy days and the probability of precipitation start to increase after the middle of July reaching nearly 70% every day during October, which is the peak of the "wet season".
